The menopause and toxic load
Reducing your toxic load in perimenopause & menopause
Environmental toxins can really damage your health, and women are particularly vulnerable to this during hormonal changes such as puberty and menopause.
Toxicologists job is to look at the health implications of the multitude of chemicals that now exist in our environment and to then advise government agencies on the safe amount of these chemicals so that they can then set regulations on safe amounts used. Whilst this is helpful, there are a few issues with this process. Firstly, a lot of these regulations become out of date, secondly, the toxicologists generally are looking at a chemical in isolation and not looking at either the cumulative effect over longer periods of time, or the cocktail effect of multiple chemicals in use together. In 2023, UK regulators requested more scientific data on several of these ingredients, which they are currently reviewing to determine if they need to be banned from products.
With everyday exposure to more and more chemicals on the increase and a limited data on long term effects, it is even more important than ever that as consumers we are more aware of the ingredients that we consume in our everyday products. Women generally have smaller bodies than men and a slightly different hormonal structure, so they may be less able to handle higher toxic loads.
There are many numbers thrown around about how many toxins we are exposed to daily, but a recent study done by the Environmental Working Group shows that women use around 12 personal care products daily, containing 168 unique ingredients. This study estimated that one woman out of 24 was exposed to product ingredients that may affect fertility or pregnancy outcomes, and one out of five adults is exposed to carcinogenic impurities daily from multiple sources.
So, what to look out for in your products when you are in a key hormonal change in life? Endocrine disruptors are a great place to start in terms of things to try and reduce or eliminate. Endocrine disruptors are natural or human-made chemicals that may mimic or interfere with the body’s hormones, known as the endocrine system. These chemicals are linked with many health problems in both wildlife and people. Unfortunately, they can be commonly found in beauty products in ingredients such as phthalates, triclosan, synthetic fragrances and most chemical sunscreens.
The simplest way to avoid these sorts of chemicals, is to be more aware of the ingredients in your everyday products. Making a few simple changes and swapping out some everyday products such as shampoo, moisturiser and lipstick can dramatically reduce your exposure to these harmful ingredients.
